Blessing of the Graves

Theresa writes:

At the blessing of the graves today I notices a big increase
in the amount of people attending and the large amount of eldery people
who found it quite difficult to make their way to the graves on foot. I
would like to suggest that parking nearest the graveyard be reserved
for invalides and some provision for the elderly. Also at holy communion
time instead of these people some rather feeble having to make their
way across very uneven ground to receive, that maybe some ministers of
the eucharist be appointed in more suitable parts of the cemetary to
facilitate our eldery congregration. There is one full year before this
comes about again so I hope that by then, there could be consideration
given to this suggestion.

Low school speed limits delay 'endangering children' - Irish Independent

Low school speed limits delay 'endangering children' - Irish Independent

Interesting article in today's independent. Obviously some political point scoring going on as the holiday season draws to a close. All that been said the report points out that Ireland has the worst child pedestrian deaths in Europe.

True story: A child attending Whitecross believed that the school, which has 20,000 cars passing by every day, was so called because of the white line in the playground which it was forbidden to cross. The line is there to keep children far away from the perimeter and the heavy traffic passing yards from the playground.

RTE News - Nine News

Laytown Beach on the News

Finally a stranded car on Laytown beach has made the news. This common occurance, especially during the Summer months is usually some of the best entertainment available on the beach as happless drivers can't figure out why their cars which are perfectly able to drive on a road cannot move in sand.

Any chance of posting a news item on an upcoming event at Sonairte? There will be a Heritage Day on the 28th August at the centre, from 11am to 5pm. Information given below - more is available on www.sonairte.org

Come down to Sonairte to experience a day of events exploring Ireland's rich heritage. Flower Boxes Attempted Vandalisation

It was only a matter of time but over the weekend persons unknown tried to push one of the new flower boxes installed on the bridge into the river. Luckily the box was sufficiently robust to withstand this although the metal brackets were severly bent.

I'd urge everyone to keep watch and report any suspicious activity to the police.

Road signs in Drogheda

Road signs in Ireland

Is it just me or does it not strike one as odd that two years after the M1 opened there are no signposts in Drogheda pointing to it. You would think that after spending more than €200 million on a thing you would let people know where it is. You can actually see the new bridge but don't try and get there by car.

Granted I hardly expected the N1 signs to be replaced when the road was renamed the R132, we just have to wait for them to fall down. It can't help tourists when the only signs point to a non-existant road.

It's not as if signs can't be changed there was no problem upgrading to metric speed signs.

To all. Please pay particular attention to Julianstown this week as the judges from Meath County Council's pride of place initiative will be here to judge the new look Julianstown. A huge amount of work has been done in the last three months to prepare the village.

Information on Trees and Wall

Niamh Writes:
I must say your web site is really improving every day. Please keep up the good work.
Would anyone have any idea of when the Cherry trees were planted, and any info on the retaining wall which was unearthed?

(Ed: Note a very nice stone retaining wall was unearthed during the village clean up. If any one has information on this or on when the cherry blossoms were planted please email)

Shops for Julianstown.

Julianstown Inn Planning

On July 29th a planning application was lodged with Meath County Council for a mixed retail/residential in the car park of the Julianstown Inn. It is proposed to extend the line of the village facing onto the road with shops and appartments. The application is in the name of Ashetown Inns the company which operates the local pub.

There will be access through an archway to car parking at the rear of the development. It is about time that Julianstown got some shops as the population is propsed to expand to at least 1000 over the next 6 years. The application can be viewed at County Council offices in Duleek. There are five weeks for members of the public to make observations and the decision is due September 29th

Drogheda Independent Plagiarisng Julianstown.Com

Drogheda Independent

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the Drogheda Independent has been lifting the odd story from Julianstown.Com.

Stories such as the lawnmower theft, School Garden and the Gormanstown speed camera have all been copied almost verbatim from this site. On the one hand I am flattered that such a widely consulted organ such as the DI sees fit to rely on Julianstown.Com for local news. But on the other hand they are doing without acknowledging the source.

A letter reminding the DI Editor of the laws of copyright has been issued
